Interstates

I've heard this before but can never remember it when it's important. Thankfully, the hubs has a steel trap brain!

Odd-numbered highways run north to south
Even-numbered highways run east to west

(I still believe you can't always count on this!)

I believe that you are correct in not totally counting on this! For example Interstate 94 runs east west except in Chicagoland. Overall it runs east west across the United States, but it has to get around Lake Michigan and ends up running north south. If you are just driving around Chicagoland 94 will not take you east or west.
